Scientific investigation of Aikido ki
Many scientists and practitioners are convinced of the efficacy of acupuncture and acupressure and, thanks to this increasing acceptance of its efficacy, it is now available on the National Health Service in the UK. [21] Most scientists do, however, dispute the existence of Qi, ascribing the therapeutic effects of acupuncture to physiological changes induced in nerve cells by the act of 'needling', to endorphin-release, relaxation or simple placebo effects.[22] As a result, other therapies purporting to involve the manipulation of qi, but that do not involve direct physiological intervention (such as Reiki) are not made available. The NIH Consensus Statement on acupuncture in 1997 noted that concepts such as Qi "are difficult to reconcile with contemporary biomedical information but continue to play an important role in the evaluation of patients and the formulation of treatment in acupuncture."[23]
Some people [citation needed] believe that qi in scientific terms is really bioelectromagnetism, the electric current that exists in nature and runs through our nerves, sending signals to and from the brain. However, these neural signals have been extensively analyzed and quantified by modern neuroscience and their connection, if any, to qi is spurious.
